What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non invasive complementary health touch therapy that aims to optimise both physical and emotion health. It works by massaging and stimulating your body’s own natural healing abilities, to aid rebalancing of the body systems , by applying fingers or thumbs to pressure points of your face, hands and feet called reflexes. Reflexologists work holistically to treat the whole person.

History
Reflexology is an ancient practice, its origin and history are difficult to track. The first record noted was a pictograph on the Egyptian tomb of Ankhamor in 2330 BC along with other medical procedures. There are also reflexology symbols on the feet of statues of Buddha in India and later China.
- 1917, William H. Fitzgerald, MD, (father of reflexology) wrote ten vertical zones that extended the length of the body. The application of pressure to a zone that corresponded to the location of an injury could serve as relief of pain during minor surgeries.
- Dr. Shelby Riley, then developed a map of horizontal zones going across the body and a detailed map of reflex points on the feet and hands. He also suggested pressure points on the outer ear.
- Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist who worked for Dr. Riley, is a prominent figure in the development of reflexology and zone therapy’s pressure points, she found the feet to be the most sensitive and responsive. She developed foot maps and reflexology charts still in use today, introducing reflexology practices to the non-medical community in the 1930s.

Why reflexology?

Reflexology helps to balance and relax the body systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, muscular, integumentary and lymphatic.
Applying fingers or thumbs to pressure points on your hands and feet can aid the rebalancing of these body systems, and not just the area of pain and stimulate the body’s own natural healing abilities. This pressure on the reflex points produces referral sensations that balance a particular system or part of the body. There are about 7,800 nerves. Each one of these nerves corresponds to different parts of the body. Stimulating these nerves can stimulate each part of the body.
